Sculpture

The Somme

The inspiration for this piece came from unpublished sepia photographs seen in Saint George’s Chapel at Ypres. The photograph showed a dead soldier lying in a trench. Two large rats were eating the side of his face.

The base of the piece uses the runners and risers as used in the investment. The pouring cup section is attached to runner to give the impression of a German stick grenade.

Exhibit Info

The barbed wire is made from copper wire and has not been patinated. It is not fixed and allows the purchaser of this piece to have some interaction with the sculpture. The barbed wire can be moved and the application varied. In fact one could obtain some wire from Ypres and interface it with this piece.

The most unusual aspect of this piece of sculpture is that it was buried in a farmer’s field at Ypres. The earth was mix with copper crystals and the resultant is unique piece of art.

This is an artist’s proof piece, and the moulds have been destroyed. Further details and information can be obtained from John Toomey.
